The KINGBEE is the sixth mystery in the Sam and Howie series. When an audacious jail break and a brazen bank robbery occur in Marion, Indiana, the two detectives are jolted into action. Following the trail of the criminals they are rudely confronted and taken prisoners inside an abandoned coal mine. Held in an underground room that many years ago housed ponies used to pull coal carts to the mine entrance they see no means of escape. Looking around in the dim light they notice a faded Bible verse scratched with coal on the wall. Many tantalizng questions arise as to why the verse was marked with coal on the limestone surface in such a secluded location. The sudden appearance of The KINGBEE adds to the complexity of the investigation. Who is this character? Why does he suddenly show up? During the investigation Sam and Howie become aware of sensitive information kept secret since the 'moonshine' days of the 1920's and early 1930's by the residents of Pumpkin Blossom, a small town near the coal mine. Is this information important or should it be buried as past history? As ths saga comes to a climax several alarming events occur. One of the wanted culprits eludes capture and vanishes from sight. In another troubling instance the Indiana State Police discover a safe in the blacksmith's shop. Inside the safe are gold coins and an envelope discolored with age addressed to a resident of Marion. Then the blacksmith is found dead the next day. Also, the F.B.I. laboratory technicians have examined a roll of microfilm found inside a fake molar in the mouth of the corpse of one of the jail escapees. About the Book
In August 1948, a daring bank robbery occurs at the First Express Bank in Marion, Indiana. At the same precise time, three inmates are sprung from the local jail by a stranger dubbed the Mayor. As special deputies, Sam and Howie are directed by Sheriff Neverfine to track down the culprits. The trail leads to a secret chemical laboratory located in a deserted coal mine deep inside an obscure mountain in Southern Indiana. Captured and shackled inside the mine, Sam and Howie notice a faded Bible verse on the stone wall. Who scratched the verse on the wall? Why does the verse appear in such an odd location? Does the verse have any special meaning or message for people who entered the room in past years? The deputies then discover that the devious criminals are developing a secret chemical called BrainX. When this substance is absorbed into the brain cells of subjects they become as zombies, responding only to the directives of the scheming experimenters. When Sam and Howie learn that they are destined to be the first human subjects to be infused with BrainX, their future existence as normal persons is in jeopardy. Will they ever be able to escape from the ongoing tortuous nightmare? And how about the Kingbee? Why does he suddenly show up? How does this character fit into the ongoing mysterious saga? About the Author
The author, George S. Haines, was reared on a working farm in Indiana. As an educator, he taught students ranging in age from high school to the post-graduate level. Haines graduated from Purdue University with BS and MS degrees. His doctorate was earned at George Peabody, now a college at Vanderbilt University. At Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, he was professor of education and director of teacher education. He lives in Fort Myers, Florida.
