CHAPTER 1
FAVOUR IS NOT FAIR
One evening my wife was preparing for a job interview. As a result I started encouraging her, and these words came into my mind, “favour is not fair”. Immediately I recalled the words in the book of Proverbs 3:4 that say, “So shall you find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man”.
I then said to her, “It doesn’t matter how well you are prepared for the interview, but if you don’t have favour with the interviewers you will not make it”. Sometimes you may say, I did well in that interview and expect good results only to get a negative outcome. When you did badly and you know that you could have done better than that, you don’t expect good results. But because you have gained their favour and they liked you regardless of how you performed, the results will come out positive and you know that it was God’s grace (unmerited favour). I just realised that favour can open doors that no man can. It can go far beyond your ability. Hence I say that favour is not fair.
You may ask, what is favour? Favour is an act performed out of good will, generosity or mercy. Amplified Bible says, “So shall you find favour, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight [or judgment] of God and man” (Proverbs 3:4). When you have favour with God, you automatically find favour and approval with man. You will be highly esteemed by man in whatever you do. That’s what favour will do for you.
Remember that promotion doesn’t come from the East or West, North or from the South. But God is the judge! He puts down one and lifts up another. If you have good understanding and high esteem in the sight of God and man, God will align man’s judgment to agree with His judgment for you to be promoted to another level.
You might be asking yourself this question, what must I do to get this favour? The answer is absolutely nothing; you don't have to do anything to gain favour except to spend time with God. The Bible tell us that Moses was the only man on earth who use to spend time with God and spoke to Him face to face like man speaks to his friend. Moses knew God and was used by God to perform miracles, but still wanted to know His ways better.
In Exodus 33:13 Moses prayed to God and said, “If I have found favour in your sight, please show me now your ways that I may know you better in order to find favour in your sight.” Favour is not a once off thing but it's continuous and can be experienced daily. Favour is for a life time, Psalms 30:5 declares that his anger is but for a moment, and his favour is for a lifetime.
God said to Moses, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” God’s presence is His attributes and it attracts favour. When you devote your time in the presence of God through the word, prayer and worship, you will find favour wherever you go. When God’s favour is on your life, you don’t need to do anything but to rest in his presence as He will do the rest and give you victory.
The evidence of God's presence in your life, it’s His favour. Moses said to God, “If your presence does not go with me, do not carry us up from here.” (Exodus 33:15). Don't make any move if God’s presence is not with you, as you will need His favour. How do you know that you have found favour in God’s sight? It’s when His presence goes with you and you are distinct from all other people.
Favour will give you preferential treatment and respect from people. If God is with you like He was with Joseph, you will have favour with man and you will prosper wherever you go. Looking at the life of Joseph based on the scripture below, you can see without a shadow of doubt that this man had God's favour.
"The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand. And Joseph found favour in his sight, and he served him: and he made him supervisor over his house, and he put all that he had in his charge". (Genesis 39:2-4)
God want us to experience breakthrough in every area of our lives. It takes favour in your life to open doors that were closed for you. You can walk to any door and they will be opened for you because of the favour of God. Opportunities will present themselves to you but you must be ready to seize them.
