Do You Know What It Is Like?
To hide inside as you are growing up,
even with all the people you know and talk with,
all the friends you play with and the ones you don’t,
always holding back the truth even from yourself at times.
Do you know what is it like to hide you are a girl inside? I do.
Always feeling her when you walk or awkwardly throw a ball,
or talk excitedly about something other than sports,
only to abruptly end the conversation.
Do you know what that is like? I do.
Then to secretly hear them say, “Oh… he’s just quiet, reads a lot, but; kinda of weird. Ya know?”
Do you know what it is like to hear that over and over about yourself? I do.
And to be thinking all the while, maybe there will be a time I will stand up, look my parents in the eyes and say, “I am transgender, I am a girl inside.
I need to come out now.
Will you still love me?”
This is my maybe…
I stand; I look them all in the eyes and say, “I am transgender, I am a girl inside.
I am coming out now. Whatever you think of me;
I forgive you.”

About the Book
Brigit Byron Coons always knew she would be an artist, from her early beginnings in Detroit to her cross-country adventure that ended in San Francisco, where she found her voice. In 2012, she began transition to live full time as female—a psychological, emotional, and physical transformation as her truest gender identity was finally brought to light.
In My Own Seasons, Brigit brings together twenty-four poems that transcribe the artist’s struggles and triumphs over fear, painful doubt, and self-denial. In “Do You Know What It Is Like,” Brigit portrays her own years of hiding behind an identity that she was born to but was not her own. Then, in “Divas Door,” she sings the praises of freedom found in embracing one’s own truth.
Brigit finds joy in self-expression, no longer afraid of being her sincerest self. She speaks of the beautiful woman who has always lain dormant inside, waiting to spring forth. She gives herself permission to be fully alive. Her words are a celebration, but more than that, they carry weight. Never give up on your cherished dreams, and bravely live the life you desire—from your heart.
About the Author
Brigit Byron Coons was born in Detroit, Michigan, and attended Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts. She then headed to the West Coast, where she became an artist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She developed her distinctive writing style through journaling.
