I gently reached for the snowman as I reached for Kristopher’s hand, turning the snowman upside down. “Place your hand right here," I said as I moved his hand to the lower portion of the clay.
“Is that…” he began to ask, but his voice stopped mid-sound. He was realizing what I had lost. The handprints made Jill real to him now, not just some child in a tragic story.
“It’s her handprint. That sweet handprint,” I told him. He put his large hand over the small place where there were four extra ridges on the lower side. She had accidently pressed harder with her right hand as she was finishing her art and left behind partial ridges; the perfect peaks and valleys for her small hand.
He looked up at me and smiled through his tears. “I love you.” It was the first time he had said it out loud. He had shown me so much love, and joked that I would love him when we first met. But this time, I could feel the devotion in his words.

E. F. Brown worked thirty years in the technology field. Married with two grown daughters, she lives in Weddington, North Carolina. This is Brown’s debut book.
