LIGHTNING strikes and kills boy in early 1900 According to an article in the Sylvania Sentinel dated 2-9-1939 they mention that lightning struck down in Sylvania and hit the one-room school house known as Ginger Hill. The 1939 article said: “Who remembers way back 35 years ago when lightning struck the Ginger Hill school house and killed Ivan Blalock. Charlie Keeler was a student there at the time and tells us that Ivan had been sent into the entry way for a misdemeanor. During a storm, lightning struck the flag pole, came through the roof and killed the boy as he stood whittling a whistle out of a willow reed. Belle Neidermeyer, another student, was knocked unconscious by the same bolt. Miss Lilly Stone was a teacher there, her brother Jim taught at Centennial and their father Lime Stone was a member of the Board of Education and was also the truant officer. Dr. U.A. Cooke was also a teacher at this school in years gone by.” The Ginger Hill school house did exist, and was located in the Sylvania Township School District No. 6, and was located on the west side of Flanders Road, south of Alexis Road. Using the actual school board minutes of the Sylvania Township School Board of Education it was discovered that the first school that was built on the one acre parcel here in District No. 6 was a brick building in 1883. Then in 1900 that brick schoolhouse was removed and a new wooden school house was built on the same foundation. At this time I have not been able to verify that the incident really took place. I cannot find a “Blalock” or any variation of that last name who died at that time. My research findings on this 1939 article included the following:

Located in northwestern Ohio, Sylvania is a suburb of Toledo, Ohio, and for many years has been known as the fastest growing suburb in Lucas County. A once-rural farm community between both the city and township, they have grown from a combined 2,220 residents in 1910 to 48,487 in 2010. Over a short period, the land has transformed into beautiful subdivisions of grand houses so that now their subdivision names are all that remain to remind them of their once-dense forests and sprawling farmlands. No longer can Sylvania be called the bedroom community of Toledo because over the last fifty years, they have done a lot more than sleep.
About the Author
GAYLEEN E. GINDY is a free-lance writer and author from Sylvania, Ohio, and for many years has also been known as Gaye E. Gindy. She has been researching the history of the Sylvania community for over 30 years. She was employed for 33 years with the public entities of Sylvania Township and the City of Sylvania, working in the services of the Sylvania Township Fire Department, Administration offices of Sylvania Township and the City of Sylvania Police Division. She also wrote a weekly history column for the local newspaper, the Sylvania Herald, for five years titled “Sylvania As It Was,” and has had history articles appear in: The Bend of the River, Lee Raizk, Publisher, The magazine of the historic Maumee Valley; Fort Industry Reflections, published by the Lucas County Chapter OGS; Sylvania AdVantage, publisher Sharon Lange; Sylvania Herald published by Herald Newspapers.
