A Squirrel’s Tale of a Crow’s Feat

...the crows (caws) and the squirrels (grays) disliked each other very much and were always fighting. Only the older crows, with gray on the tips of their feathers, remembered when they didn’t like each other anymore. How often does it happen that we don’t like another person so much, that after awhile, even though we forget why we don’t like them, we cannot change our heart. It appeared that the crows and the squirrels would remain bitter enemies. For anything to change, it would take a miracle. ...The squirrels spent their days playing and storing nuts and making nests…and fighting with the crows. Not even the grays’ parents recalled why there was such a hatred between the crows and the squirrels, but they knew to keep their babies inside. For one gray swears the problems began when a flock of crows attacked and killed a gray, and the next day the body was gone! ...Back on the roof of the Church, Tiny was enjoying the sun on her face, when suddenly, everything changed. A dark shadow covered her like a blanket and blocked out the warm sun from her face... And then she felt the cross on which she was standing move slightly, as though some weight had been added to the other side. Out of the corner of her eye, she peered around the top of the cross, trying not to be noticed, and the worst of her nightmares came true… it was him! ...The hawk let out a scream, the worse sound she had ever heard, and Ptera thought it would be the last sound she ever heard. But at that moment Pentecost jumped on the roof and started barking. Who’d a thought squirrels could bark! The Sentinel ignored Pentecost and was ready to grab Ptera when a giant crow with gray around his beak landed on the roof in front of Ptera. The crow was shaking, but held his ground. The Sentinel lunged toward him with talons extended and surprisingly Pentecost jumped at the hawk. Ptera slid down the roof, and the Sentinel, now mixed up, took off, circled, and then flew beyond sight.
