Jessie Redmon Fauset

About the Book

This book is about the truly remarkable black American woman writer Jessie Redmon Fauset, who was born on April 27, 1882, and died on April 30, 1961. She wrote her four novels, which will be the primary focus of this book, during the intriguing Harlem Renaissance period—the 1920s and 1930s—in our nation’s history (Rowen & Brunner 2000–2015). Jessie Redmon Fauset was a phenomenal black woman writer who lived her life as a/an author, editor, friend, mentor, party planner, poet, social activist, teacher, and honorary member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. (Wikipedia [Magioladitis ed.] 2017). The list could go on and on, but I have decided to focus on these areas in this book. Jessie Redmon Fauset was a true mentor and supporter for struggling black writers during the Harlem Renaissance. This is what and who, as a woman and a writer, Jessie Redmon Fauset is to me.

About the Author

Dr. Catherine J. Johnson is now living in Memphis, Tennessee where she grew up and received her elementary through high school education. After graduating from Hamilton high School in 1967, she started her collegiate studies at Lemoyne-Owen College where she received her Bachelor of Science in Education Degree in Elementary Education in 1971. In 1975, she received her Master of Science in Education Degree in Instructional Materials from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois and in 1997, Dr. Johnson received her Doctor of Education Degree from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Dr. Johnson , retired, but recently employed as Interim Library Director of The Hollis F. Price Library at LeMoyne-Owen College has worked for Memphis City Schools, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL, Atlanta Public Schools, Part time instructor at Clark Atlanta University and Part time Instructional Librarian at The LeMoyne-Owen College Hollis F. Price Library. Throughout her professional career, she has thoroughly enjoyed each experience. In addition to this book, Dr. Johnson has published three other books with AuthorHouse. They are: “Queen Vashti: Beloved Black Queen”, “Orpah Walked Ahead of Ruth”, and “Corine, A Little Lower Than Angels”. She loves writing because it enables her to express thoughts and stories that dwell within her. She believes that writing is her gift from God and she wants to use it to bring joy and knowledge to others. When not writing, she loves traveling across our Nation, and international traveling. She also enjoy reading, biking, exercising, line dancing, singing in her church choirs, playing bridge, and socializing with others. She is the proud mother of three adult children who have brought an abundance of love and joy to her life. She and her daughters, who are twins, are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. When discussing why she wrote this particular book, she readily acknowledges that Jessie Redmon Fauset is one of her favorite writers and she feels a kindred spirit with her Delta Soror, Jessie Redmon Fauset.
