Children need to know the difference between being alive and being dead. Let them know that taking a breath and letting it out, that means they are alive. Show them that putting their hand over their heart, feeling it beating, shows them that they are alive. Dead people don't breathe and don't have heart beats. Talking about death for most people is a very difficult topic. It can make them feel very uncomfortable. We need to break down this barrier and start to talk about death, dying grieving, and our feelings. We need to remember that this is normal. We are born and then we die, that's life. Everyone needs to be prepared as best as possible to be able to open the topic and talk about how it makes us feel. Grief can be sporadic; you will have some good days and some bad days. One minute you could be laughing with a friend at a joke, then the next minute you could be crying because of a song or a memory. The memories and some of the pain may always be with you. Your grief may soften and become less over time, but that doesn't mean you're forgetting your loved one.
