Contemporary science, particularly quantum physics, has confirmed two ancient metaphysical concepts: that consciousness is the foundation of reality, and that humans live in a world of illusion, a virtual reality. Ancient Oriental philosophical religions, such as Jainism, Vedanta, and Buddhism, have held similar ideas for centuries. They also believe that the physical world was not created and has existed since time immemorial. Humans have an innate tendency to create myths to find meaning and purpose in their lives. They create significant stories, called noble myths, that give meaning and transcend the state of prevalent things. In a sense, humanity without a central myth would be rootless and aimless and would not reach the level of modern civilization. Existential myths are stories that convey a message to make sense of life and set principles of motivation for action. In their ultimate essence, they are "noble lies." They are accounts or tales fashioned by visionary mythmakers to provide exemplary models as an inspiration for human action to emulate. On the other hand, creation myths attempt to explain how the universe came to be and how humans were created. They satisfy the need "to know" or to have a coherent explanation of the existence of humans and the world, such as the creation myths of Genesis, Enuma Elish, and many others. Noble lies can also be used for social control or to manipulate social behavior according to the dictates of the ruling elite. Some religious leaders make people believe that a powerful deity is watching over human deeds to instill social order. In the social and political arena can be mentioned that the Declaration of Independence was based on a noble lie. According to the philosopher Leo Strauss, the principles established in the American Declaration of Independence have no cosmological, metaphysical, or scientific basis. The proclamation that all humans were born free and had the same rights is untenable. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were landlords and enslaved people; they knew that not all humans were born free and had the same privileges. However, the principles expressed were beautiful noble lies that worked then and still do.

More than 2,500 years ago, Buddha stated that life is an illusion, and today’s most accurate science, quantum physics, asserts that we live in virtual reality. The truth can challenge our deepest convictions and induce confusion because we live based on false assumptions imposed by our ancestors, mass media, outdated education systems, and traditional erroneous beliefs.
