By that afternoon, a large and diverse throng were flocking into Castleton, with the majority of them congregating in the approach to Peak Cavern. Alongside willing volunteers, journalists and news reporters, the unfolding drama was attracting no end of curious onlookers. It had never been so crowded, not even at the height of the summer season. Given the limited amenities in the vicinity, and the narrowness of the path through the gorge leading up to the gaping mouth of the Vestibule, those not actively involved in the rescue effort were doing more harm than good by their presence. How could competent and qualified personnel be distinguished from unwanted sightseers?

About the Book
This book tells the tale of an unforeseen caving disaster which occurred in the tranquil and picturesque Derbyshire village of Castleton back in 1959, and how the widespread publicity surrounding this event attracted international media attention.
About the Author
David Ward is a practising solicitor based in Sheff ield, England. Having lived close to the Peak District National Park all his life, he is well acquainted with the area and knows Castleton particularly well. His two previous publications with Authorhouse, “All Roads Lead to Rome” (2015) and “Back to Blighty” (2021) recall the highs and lows of epic cycling challenges.
