26. Conflict Evan entered the kitchen just as Stephen and Michael rose from the breakfast table. “Stephen, have you been working on the pieces George gave you last week?” “Yes, sir,” Stephen answered, a sense of foreboding descending as he handed his bowl and spoon to Mrs. Ingalls. His gaze passed over Michael’s face as he turned to face Evan. He saw Michael almost choke on his final mouthful of cereal. Apparently Michael also guessed what Mr. Ingalls was about to say. “That’s good,” Evan grinned. “Yesterday, George asked me to bring you in this morning.” Stephen’s heart plummeted to his feet. This was the last thing he needed... “I see,” Stephen said, thinking. “What time does he want me there?” “Around ten. Think you’ll be ready?” Stephen hesitated before answering. Can’t Mr. Ingalls see? “I suppose so.” He didn’t dare look at Michael’s face; he knew he’d see resentment. Stephen fervently wished Mr. Ingalls would notice the expression on his son’s face and realize the cause of the strained relationship between the two boys, but even as the thought crossed Stephen’s mind, Evan turned away. “If anyone needs me,” he said over his shoulder, “I’ll be in my studio.” I suppose not, Stephen thought. He stood silently for a moment, looking after Evan, his eyes focused on infinity. Of all the places he could have chosen to tell me that, he had to choose the worst possible one. The resignation he felt filled Stephen’s sigh. His shoulders drooped under the weight of the emotional load he was carrying as he walked from the kitchen on the way to his room. Respect, honesty, truthfulness, and courtesy were taught in his classroom, along with the usual academic subjects. Mr. Davis was listed in Who’s Who Among Mr. Davis’ writing is inspired by the personalities of former students and the interaction he experiences with young people. His hobbies include reading, writing, amateur astronomy, and photography. Mr. Davis enjoys spending time with young people.
