The wooden casket propped up before a circle of a mere handful of mourners showed a picture of the life Miss Mack spent in loneliness. Phyllis and Shirley stood on either side of Ray, clinging to his arms as if to keep from falling down to the artificial grass mat covering the bare ground. Gina watched the tears stream down Phyllis’s cheeks. Ray reached in his pocket and handed her his handkerchief. Gina scanned the mourners. She felt a sense of deep sympathy, not only for the death but also for the lack of family and friends, which openly displayed the lonely life Miss Mack spent in life as well as in death. Suddenly, Gina heard the sound of a beeper. She turned and looked back to see Noah behind the small grouping. He opened his black suit jacket and checked the number on the beeper. "What’s he doing here?" she thought. Without waiting for the finish of the ceremony, Noah quickly turned and headed directly to his car. Aside from Phyllis, Shirley, Ray, Lulu, Fred, Scott, and herself, only Miss Mack’s immediate neighbors were present. Where were her gentlemen callers? Surely they heard of her passing. Was there a reason for their absence? The Minister picked up the hand trowel, scooped up some dirt - "Ashes to ashes, dust to--" and sprinkled it on the casket as it cranked it’s way into the hollow hole that will be home to Miss Mack forever. "Rest in peace," Gina whispered to herself.

"C’mon Gina, you’re pulling at straws. We’re talking ‘big time' here!" He had to be convinced. Gina’s stubborn and sometimes wild ideas finally convinced Noah to go along with her nonsensical ideas that a little old Lithuanian farm woman should be watched. It paid off.
About the Author
Sera Flenniken’s diverse background consisted of three years training in the Arts under a professional artist who studied in Germany. Ms Flenniken sold many of her works. She has two grown children. Her husband, (retired) oil executive, and family moved to many States and lived three years in Florence, Italy. Her first non-fiction novel told of their exciting experiences living and traveling extensively throughout Europe. She is currently working on a fourth novel.
