In writing this book I was wondering how to introduce the reader to the Macy family and in particular how to set the stage for the thousands that descend from Thomas Macy and his wife Sarah Hopcott that are chronicled in this two volume set. While I was giving consideration to this need for an introduction of the family, I came across a book Quaker Nantucket- The Religious Community Behind the Whaling Empire by Robert J. Leach and Peter Gow. The first chapter in this book made it completely clear as to how I should introduce the reader to the Macy ancestors and provide the reader a contextual setting for this family in the United States of America. I have taken the liberty to quote from Chapter one of the book as follows "One October 30, 1659 Only the Oak trees still hold onto their brown and curled leaves. The cold east winds of the past weeks have stripped the rest bare, and even the evergreens look exhausted and demoralized. It is the time of year when the people of this barren northern Massachusetts coastline look to their woodpiles and hope they have enough for the coming winter. It is an ugly and harsh season. No one feels the ugliness more that Sarah Macy. With her husband humiliated and she and her children increasingly shunned by their neighbors, each task is trebly burdensome, each blast of air through her house more chilling. Soon, at last this part of her life will be over. Just as soon, however, she will once again have to start all over in a new home in a new country. The chance to live as she and her husband had wished still prove elusive, and at times she allows herself to regret ever coming to Salisbury Village. How little they had been able to bring from England, and the promised plenty of the New World has given them but little more. As she wraps each of her few dishes in a piece of clothing and packs it tightly in a small cask for transport, she wonders whether the new place will be the same or different...

This is a book about the descendants of Thomas Macy in the
Volume I contains the first 9 generations and a part of the 10th, Volume II contains the remainder of the 10th generation to generation 15, the endnotes of which there are over 20,000 and the index.
About the Author
Dr. J. Derald Morgan is an accomplished author, genealogist, family historian and expert witness. Dr. Morgan was a University Professor and Administrator for 46 years. He served as Vice President and Executive Director of the UAH Foundation at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, was Dean at New Mexico State University, and was Department Head and the ALCOA and Emerson Electric Chaired Professors at University of Missouri-Rolla now Missouri Science and Technology during his academic career. Dr. Morgan is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers and Associate Editor of the Power Systems Research Journal. In addition to being a successful researcher, professor and university administrator, he is a forensic engineer with an active practice. Dr. Morgan has been an adult Boy Scout Leader for over 48 years, a leader in the United Methodist Church and a member of numerous professional and civic organizations. The father of four children and grandfather to 9 he has been an avid family historian for over 40 years. He believes that knowing your roots is essential to developing a perspective on who you are and what your role is in society. Knowing your roots gives a foundation for a successful and fulfilling life. As a member of the Sons of the American Revolution Dr. Morgan also believes that every American needs more knowledge about their family and its contribution to the development of this great nation. Out of this knowledge grows an appreciation for the freedoms we have and a commitment to sustaining a free society.
