Miracle
As the early morning mist disappeared, the revealed baby blue sky was captured and reflected in the nearby river. The sun’s heat gave way to a seemingly ordinary day in Plainville.
Queen, a twelve-year-old girl, could be seen playing along the river with the other kids, but unlike the others, she possessed an extraordinary gift that had been dormant until…
Queen’s stepmother called her in to run an errand. She rode her bike to Mrs. Simmons’s Ma and Pa store. On her way a rumbling sound was heard in the distance.
Inside the store Queen heard the same noise but slightly louder.
“What is that noise?” Queen asked as she paid for the pepper.
Mrs. Simmons stopped, tilted her head, and stretched her neck so her right ear could listen.
“I don’t hear anything unusual,” she said, then turned and waited on her next customer.
Queen heard the sound again as she exited the store, but this times it was louder. Not sure if she was the only one hearing these sound, Queen stopped and asked one of the boys playing out front,
“Do you hear that noise?”
“What noise?” the boy asked.
“It sounds almost like thunder.”
“No, you’re crazy,” the boy said as he walked away giggling.
Queen hears the sound again for the third time and became frightened and unsure of what to do. So, she instinctively rode her bike toward the church that was located in the opposite direction. She knew the elders would be there. She felt they would listen and not criticize, unlike her stepmother.
Queen arrived petrified and scared, but waited patiently in the hallway of Beulah Baptist Church. She did not dare interrupt the Bible Study Class as her upbringing taught her better. As soon as the class finished, Queen approached the pastor’s wife.
“Mrs. Mabel, Mrs. Mabel, could I please talk to you?”
“Yes child, what is it?”
“I heard loud noises.”
“What noises?”
“I am not sure,” Queen said, almost in tears.
“Are you alright, child?
“No, ma’am.”
“Come to the office child,” Mrs. Mabel said as she walked toward a room behind the pulpit. She stopped and gestured goodnight to the folks in the class.
“I don’t think it’s safe out there!” Queen said as she followed.
“Don’t be silly, they’ll be fine.”
When they entered the office Mabel gave her water from the bubbler. “Child, why are you out this way alone?”
“I heard loud… noises…like thunder,” Queen’s legs were trembling as nothing she had said made sense.
“Calm down, drink some water and relax.”
