'Mr. Ambassador,' Pham Do began. His voice was icy, and there was a sinister look about his face. This would be a fight to the finish. 'Since we both know why I'm here, we can dispense with the formalities. I assume that you understood my message. Now, I want the documents, and you want your wife and daughter. I believe that a simple trade would satisfy us both.' Do was direct and to the point. 'What about Chin Chou Ho?' I asked. 'Ho is not part of the deal, Mr. Shepard. He is mine.' Do was barely being civil. 'Ho will either be part of the deal, or there will be no deal Mr. Secretary General. Nor, I might add, will there be any further economic aid.' 'Then so be it. As far as I am concerned, the economic plan can collapse. It matters not. I already have what I want, but I still have something that you want. And if you know anything at all about me, you know that I will not only kill them, but that I will enjoy it.' 'Do you already have everything you want, Mr. Secretary General? I wonder. Let me ask you something. Have you thought about just how expendable you life will become if you destroy the agreement between our two countries? Do you think that if you are the one responsible for taking jobs and food away from your people, that you would even live long enough to get to the airport? You know folks here have gotten rather accustomed to the higher standard of living that they have enjoyed for the last few years. And just for good measure, how friendly do you think people will be when they find out just how much of the treasury you have siphoned off?' 'Now, Mr. Secretary General, allow me to tell you what I want. First, my wife and daughter are to be released unharmed. Next, Ho is to be delivered, also unharmed, to the Embassy and placed in my protection. All remains of all MIAs are to be returned to the United States at your expense for proper burial by their families. I also want your and Lu's resignations. We will appoint Ho to serve as acting secretary general until a permanent successor can be elected. Now, along those same lines, you, sir, might want to remind the Vietnamese Communist Party that they should strongly consider recommending Ho to the position permanently. That might prevent the people from ever finding out what the Party has been doing to them.' 'Mr. Ambassador,' Do was back to formalities now. 'You play the game well. But not well enough. As you may recall, the United States has always avoided an outright confrontation with China and the former USSR. Do you not still need China to help keep things under control in North Korea and help from Russia in Bosnia? Can your country afford another Communist takeover in Russia and the neighboring republics? What do you think would happen if the hands of democracy were no longer able to provide aid for Russia? Communism would rise up again without American influence, and with their ability to produce nuclear arms, they will be an even stronger more powerful superpower then they ever were before. Do you think your precious friend, Ho, is worth all that?'
