MY PRINCE

My maidenly dream was a nobleman, tall and strong,

With skillful limbs from courting hordes of girls—

A prince to carry me off with jests and song

To a huge blue bedroom of velvet, mirrors, and pearls.

All day he’d arbitrate affairs of state,

Consult and study, then dictate decrees;

All day I’d watch from afar, admire, and wait

For night to extinguish his body’s exotic needs.

I dallied with others while waiting for him to come

And passed much time in the company of several men;

They taught me how rare heroes have become

Let alone a gallant prince with a diadem.

But he came, disguised as a wanton puritan...

A poet astute and capable, God’s gentleman.
