On the way down the Red Sea, one of the Rally boats, the “Gustavus Vasa” hit a reef and was almost lost. It was, in fact, given up for lost. Sailing the Red Sea has its dangers in addition to the pirates. The reefs are numerous and treacherous, as many have never been charted. When the sailboat, “Gustavus Vasa”, crewed by A.C. Ham and his wife, was navigating through the many reefs of the Straits of Gubal, the captain was down below working out the coordinates via GPS while his wife was up at the helm. They ran up on a reef with a thud and scraping sound from down under.
They immediately radioed for help and the “Reckless of Hamble”, captained by Tim Moore, went immediately to their aid. The situation looked helpless, as the boat was far up on the reef and out of the water with the tide receding fast. The only thing to do was to try to save as much as possible of the supplies and equipment and then call it a loss. Emptying the tanks and off-loading supplies took considerable time and effort. They left her to her fate, but the next day decided to come back and continue the work for the heaver items.
Upon arriving back at the boat the next day, to their surprise they found her partially floating. Then began the effort to somehow save her. They raised the sails and Chris climbed the mast to heel her over. With motor running full tilt, the boat was able to bump and scrap, with agonizing groans, across the reef and into deep water to everyone’s relief.
Upon closer inspection, and after diving to inspect her bottom, there did not appear to be any holes, but a lot of the fiberglass netting was showing, which would require her to be pulled out of the water for further inspection and work. The outcome at this time is unknown, except that their trip south has been cancelled and the wife was calling it quits and flying back to England

About the Book
This book is the true story of one man’s attempt to live out his lifelong dream of sailing around the world to strange foreign ports in his own sailboat. Upon retiring from teaching school and farming in Michigan, Harold Knoll, Jr. left his forthcoming sedentary life, took his sailboat down to the Gulf, and headed around the world. Few men have the courage to do this, even though most of us have these dreams.
Volume I covered the first part of his journey from Michigan to Trinidad. Volume II covered his journey from Trinidad to Spain and through France to Amsterdam and Scandinavia. Volume III covered the third part of his journey from Amsterdam around the British Isles, through the French canals to the Mediterranean, and down the coast of Italy. Volume IV covers his trip from Rome to Greece and through the Aegean Sea to Turkey. Volume V covers his trip through the Black Sea and back to Turkey. Volume VI covers his trip from Turkey to the Red Sea and this Volume VII covers his trip down the Red Sea.
Captain Knoll, a true free spirit, picks up crew as he travels along. In the process, he meets many very fascinating people and has many thrilling, and sometimes humorous, experiences. Forthcoming volumes will cover the future trips that he takes as he proceeds on his voyage around the world the “wrong way” (against the prevailing winds).
About the Author
Harold Knoll, Jr.
Captain Knoll was born and raised in Michigan, where his free days were spent fishing, hunting, and boating. His dream of sailing to foreign ports developed at an early age. He learned boating and sailing on Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan. When he retired from teaching and farming, he began to live his dream of sailing around the world. Since then, he has sailed very extensively in foreign lands. He has sailed his 32 ft. sloop over 26,000 miles at the time of writing this volume. When he is temporarily home from his travels, he lives with his sailor wife in Montague, Michigan.
Harold Byler, Jr.
H. C. Byler learned to sail in the 50’s in a sailboat that he and a friend designed and built. He became interested in ocean cruising and recruited friends to rent boats and sail the North Atlantic and Long Island Sound to Nantucket. He later sailed the Northeast Pacific, the Gulf coast of Florida, the Leeward and Windward Islands of the Caribbean, the North Sea, the Western Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea, Black Sea, and the Artic Sea. He has authored several previous books and is applying this experience to assisting Captain Knoll to write this book. He lives in a small town in dry West Texas with his sailor wife of 54 years.
