About the Book
The book ,"Destroyer Squadron 12 in the Solomon's Campaign; The Tip of the Lance" consists of a condensed version of the military actions in this 18 months campaign. It was one of the biggest, bloodiest most merciless of all military campaigns. Naval fights erupted repeatedly, at night, off Guadalcanal Islands for months. The bottom of Iron Bottom Sound became littered with sunken ships and the bodies of individuals from both sides. It was a brutal soul searing experience for the unfortunate individuals who endured that brutal eighteen months of Pure Hell! This all out fight to the finish was fought on the Sea, in the Air, and in the Jungles. Men died on both sides in horrendous numbers. On the American side the Cause of Freedom swayed in the balance for the longest time. This book was written to let any interested reader know of the dedication to duty; the outright heroism; and the uncommon valor shown by boys just out of high school, who fought a fanatical foe and won out to Victory. This Nation can take pride that it could produce such brave young men, who loved the Cause of Freedom More than Life Itself. Many of them lost their lives in defense of that Cause. May they rest in peace.
About the Author
This author has had a varied experience in various fields. Having worked with individuals in a number of endeavors has provided an insight into the things that motivates others. As a boy this writer delivered newspapers for two and one half years. It was necessary to get up at four o'clock every morning and deliver 125 papers while riding a bicycle .The papers had to be delivered every afternoon also. Three years were spent attending college in engineering. This was followed by four years military service in the Regular US Navy aboard battleships. After the Attack on Pearl Harbor this writer was a crewman on one of the destroyers in Destroyer Squadron 12 in the Solomon's Campaign. 8 out of the 15 destroyers in the squadron were sunk with heavy loss of life. After the War this writer worked for the Railway Express Agency( a branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad). Next this writer was a Teamster in one of Jimmie Hoffa's biggest Driver Locals for fifteen years in the Los Angeles area. After attending Night School for seven years,at one of California's State Universities, this writer graduated in the top ten percent of the Engineering Class, and was an active member of Tau Beta Pi, the National Engineering Honor Society. After graduation this writer worked as a Thermal and Structural Stress Engineer on the Apollo Project (The flight to and from the moon) at North American Aviation's Space Agency. This assignment was followed with eleven years as a Traffic Engineer for one of California's Counties. This writer at present is a retired Registered Professional Engineer in California. During the last eight years this writer has self published eight books about various subjects and has experienced a great deal of pleasure writing books. It is this writer's sincere hope that any reader of these books enjoys them.
