As for Joe's Warm-Up Bar in the Hamlet of Montauk,the fact that the low building was nestled between two tall structures, saved the little bar from grave damage. In spite of the deluge of rain and howling winds, at the height of the storm, Joe's was filled with fishermen telling ribald stories. Luke, one of the leathery-faced seamen, in his smelly slicker and filthy, scale-encrusted boots, was holding forth. He reeked of fish, as did his audience, as they downed pint after pint, shot after shot, giving credence to the local joke, "Montauk's a drinking town with a fishing problem,."

Elizabeth Cooke, born and bred in New York City, graduate of Vassar College and the Sorbonne, is the author of a memoir, and a number of books about Paris, the arts, and personal experience. She lived on the East End of Long Island for over 30 years.
