Justin's jaw was quite tired from chewing the tough, dried meat.
The two of them sat there for quite a while without speaking.
Just as Justin was about to fall asleep in the now dark hay shelter, Squanto stood up and pulled him up, jolting him out of his stupor.
“Go now. Boy follow. No talk!" Squanto headed for the door with Justin right behind him. Opening the door cautiously, they walked out into the brisk night air. Justin shuddered as a slight breeze caused his skin to goose bump.
I wonder where Elizabeth is now? Justin stopped to peer into the pale moonlight. He could barely make out several crudely built, thatched cottages down a wide dirt path.
Does she know her Indian friend is taking me into the woods? Does she care? Justin felt a twinge of guilt even thinking that. He knew she cared. He also knew that he cared. He thought about her beautiful sky blue eyes. I will see you again my sweet, lovely Elizabeth, he promised himself as Squanto pulled on his arm, motioning to follow deeper into the dark woods.
Why am I doing
this? I must be going bonkers to trail
after this whack-o into the dark woods.
What if he loses me, or worse yet,
ditches me? Could be a nightmare. I’m going to wake up and find myself at home in my own bed... but if a nightmare, Elizabeth is part of this. And for
whatever reason that I can’t explain, I want her to be real. She has to be real!
It was becoming difficult keeping up with Squanto who was swift and sure footed. Squanto knew exactly where they were going, while Justin had to trust and follow. He was still stiff and sore from his fall and he knew nothing: not where they were going... who this man really was... where his Mom and Dad were... or even if he was coming back. In spite of real fear, a feeling he had never before experienced, he also felt intensely alive. Kind of like riding on a roller coaster for the first time: scared out of your mind, heart pounding, but excited with anticipation. Yet, with a roller coaster, you knew the ride would be over in minutes, and you would step out of the car, back into reality, safe and sound. But this was different. He was clueless. Having no choice, he had to trust this Indian from who knows where or when.

About the Book
Fourteen-year-old Justin Blake could care less about spending his summer vacation visiting Plimoth Plantation with his parents.
It was to be yet another educational encounter well planned by his history teacher mom and literature professor dad, and would only add to his reputation of being the class geek. It was time to distance himself.
What he wouldn't give to be vacationing at the new Florida theme park, Medieval World, with his best friend. He just wanted to be accepted and to fit in as one of the guys, He told himself, "I've read too many books, seen too many plays, and visited too many historical landmarks . . . it just makes me seem like a freak to everyone my own age."
Justin had no way of knowing that he was soon to embark upon a life changing odyssey that would challenge his reality and turn his world upside down.
As two worlds collide, he finds himself trapped in limbo between 1622 and 1999. His heart is divided:
Can he choose between his family and his first love? Can he sacrifice one world for the other? Is the choice even his to make?
About the Author
The youngest of five sisters, Bonnie Darlene grew up in southern California. She enjoys reading, writing, nature, music, singing, and walking her dogs. She Graduated with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Southern Connecticut State College and has completed graduate course work in Special Education.
The mother of three grown children, Bonnie has worked in various capacities with children. She has taught kindergarten, special education, and Sunday School. Living now in the beautiful state of Vermont, she is a classroom instructor for special needs students and is a home care provider. Bonnie enjoys sharing her love of folk songs and time- period ballads with children of all ages, incorporating them into their history studies.
