About the Book

The author introduces the reader to a small rag-tag group of real people, including himself, who form a consortium to purchase and restore a rare World War II B-25H. Short on money and knowledge but long on desire and tenacity, they find their dream, forlorn and neglected on a Midwest farm. The reader experiences the owners’ ten-year endeavor to restore this warrior from the past. From a civilian derelict to a pristine operating warbird named after her namesake, BARBIE III, the only flying cannon-nose B-25 in the world, makes a journey that few will ever experience. The trip shared by the reader is exciting, uncommon and challenging. If you have never been in the cockpit of a B-25 sitting between two thundering engines with the prop tips beating the air inches from your head, this book will put you there. The saga begins during World War II with a little known sojourn into the combat history of the deadly cannon-nose B-25. To many it was nothing more than a blunt nosed killing machine.

About the Author

In his middle teens, during the years of World War II, the author developed an interest in military aircraft and over several summers worked at a small airport for flying lessons. At age sixteen, before learning to drive, he soloed in a light trainer.

In 1950 during the early months of the Korean War, while in his freshman year of college, he enlisted in the Air Force serving in Europe and the Far East. He relates the experience as a Korean combat veteran and the place where he grew up in a hurry. Honorably discharged in 1953 he came home with four medals that he describes as insignificant. He returned to school and in December 1955 began a career in law enforcement.

Most of his twenty-six years in law enforcement were spent on the street as a Detective Sergeant and he retired as a Deputy Chief. He became a private detective licensed in four states and dabbled in investigations to the age of seventy-one.  He has written a book about his private detective experiences (Probe, Poke, Pry, and Peek: Detecting the Detectable).

He has owned several aircraft from a 175 HP cabin Fairchild, (The R46 and Little Louie) up to a 3400 HP twin engine B-25, (Barbie III and Company). His latest book, (Giants Over Korea: A Sky Too Far) takes the reader to the B-29 air war over North Korea with frightening detail.

He and his wife have four children and four grandchildren.
