Determining which business investment is good for you is important. There are a variety of factors to consider as you evaluate a business. As we already discussed in chapter three, some of the evaluation will depend on whether you want to purchase a big or small business. But there are other important factors. Your availability for the business investment, experience and background, and financial resources are all part of the decision making process.
Availability
How much time will you put into the business? All new business owners need to spend time with their new business investment. Also, even if you desire an absentee business, you should anticipate spending some time on your investment. Generally, a small business does better when the owner is available.
So, as you consider the small business investment, take into account what your relationship toward it will be. Will you be a day-to-day manager, maintain the books, handle staff, organize the advertising? Generally, managing employees requires time, so the more employees your business has, the more time you should anticipate spending with your investment.
It’s Not How Many Hours, It’s When: Availability also relates to not just the amount of time you’ll spend on your small business investment, but whether you are able to respond to the needs of the business promptly. Will you be able to clear your schedule at a moment’s notice to handle a crisis at the business? This may not translate into fifty hours a week, but simply means being able to respond at different times of the day and night when needed.
Influence: Also, remember one of the attractive qualities of small business investment is the level of influence it affords you. You are at the whims of the market in many other types of investments, but with small business you have influence. Be prepared to use it.
Most successful small business investors know how to manage their time. In fact, time management is vital. That subject is not a topic of this introductory book, but we will devote an entire book to that subject.

Your background should also be a factor as you decide which business is a good fit for you. There will be some learning that you will need to do no matter what business investment you choose. The amount varies with your experience and the particular industry you decide to invest in.
